Students challenge denial of admission

BANGALORE: The High Court has summoned the commissioner of the Preuniversity Board, the Deputy Director Public Instruction (DDPI) and the principal of Vidhyashrama PU College in Mysore in connection with a petition filed by students of the college challenging the denial of admission to second year PU course.A single judge bench of Justice S Abdul Nazeer, while hearing a petition filed by Somanna P T and 12 other students, directed these officials to be present in the court to explain about the permission and other activities of the college.The petitioners submitted that the college has admitted students to second year PUC even before announcing the results of the first year PUC. Those who did not take admission for the second year PUC in the college have been declared failed.Futher, they submitted that the college management has allowed a bar in the college building and there are pubs and wine shops in the surrounding area that distract students.They argued that the college is in fully involved in money making business and if any student has a shortage of attendance, the management demands `2,500 to give attendance. They also insist on students to take the college bus and the admission fee is too high.Appearing for the petitioners, counsel M T Nanaiah, citing two letters by DDPI, Mysore, dated June 16 and June 22, 2011, submitted that college has indulged in several malpractices and no action has been taken against its management.Stating that the method adopted by the college to admit students for the second year PUC as illegal and arbitrary, the petitioners submitted that such activities are affecting their education and is in violation of Article 14 of Constitution of India. They also said that they cannot concentrate on the lectures as the colllege is right in front of a bus stand.The court, after hearing the case, issued summons to the commissioner of the preuniversity board, DDPI, and college principal of Vidyashrama PU College.
