Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchendur Temple Is Famous For This Unique Ritual On Full Moon Nights
The number of devotees visiting Tiruchendur on full moon nights has seen a noticeable increase.

The Tiruchendur Subramanya Swamy Temple (Tamil Nadu) is famous worldwide, attracting hundreds of thousands of devotees, especially during significant festivals such as Thaipoosam, Sashti, and Visakam. On these occasions, devotees flock to the temple for darshan. On a daily basis, thousands of worshippers visit from various parts of the district and nearby regions. In recent times, the number of devotees visiting Tiruchendur on full moon nights has seen a noticeable increase. A unique practice has developed, where devotees now choose to sleep on the beach under the moonlight during full moon nights. This has become a common ritual; with each full moon, the number of devotees participating in this practice continues to grow.

Recently, a high tide warning was issued for the districts of Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari, following rough sea conditions. Despite this, a large number of devotees still chose to sleep on the beach during the full moon night. The police issued warnings, advising devotees to stay away from the shore and to refrain from entering the sea. While this practice of sleeping on the Thiruchendur beach is not a long-standing tradition, it has emerged as a new trend in recent years.

Many devotees believe that the moon’s energy is particularly strong on full moon nights, and by sleeping on the beach under the moonlight, their bodies absorb this positive energy. According to spiritual enthusiasts, this practice is thought to enhance one’s physical and spiritual well-being.

In addition to sleeping on the beach, some devotees also light lamps and perform prayers on the full moon nights. Although there is no documented scriptural basis or sage guidance for this practice, devotees strongly believe that worshipping Lord Muruga by staying on the beach during the full moon will cleanse their sins and bring prosperity. This belief has led many to embrace the new practice and spend the night on the shores of Thiruchendur.
