Temples desperately need repairs
Temples desperately need repairs

Sivaji Gali Gopuram of the famous shaivite temple to Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy and Sri Brahmaramba in Srisailam collapsed on October 3, even while efforts were on to repair and renovate the structure.

Not more than two years ago, Raja Gopuram of another shaivite temple in Srikalahasti, constructed by Vijayanagara emperor Srikrishna Devaraya five hundred years ago, had collapsed and the structure is yet to be reconstructed, though the works have commenced.

The situation is no different with other shivate temples: Amareswara temple at Amaravathi in Guntur district, Ramalingeswara Swamy temple at Dharmapuri in Karimnagar district among many others.

Endowments minister C Ramachandraiah admitted that all the structures are in dire need of repairs, and said that they are preparing plans to have them reconstructed or renovated in the larger interest of visiting pilgrims and protecting the heritage.

However, there are certain issues that delay implementation of plans. They include locals' opposition, delay in permissions lack of proper coordination  etc.

What's your reaction?
