New Delhi: Three people transporting cattle were allegedly beaten up by activists of an animal rights group in south Delhi’s Kalkaji late on Saturday night.
According to police, they got a call from Gaurav Gupta, an animal activist and office-bearer of PFA (People for Animals) at 11.45pm, claiming that 14 buffaloes were being transported illegally to Ghazipur. When police reached the spot, they found a tempo with the buffaloes and three occupants who were injured. They were taken to AIIMS Trauma Center.
PFA was founded by Union minister Maneka Gandhi. However, Gandhi said that no PFA member was involved in the assault. "We have no PFA unit in Delhi. We have 10,000 volunteers across the country. Whoever acted did so in his individual capacity," Maneka Gandhi's office said.
They were been arrested for inhumane transportation of animals. Later, they were granted bail.
Two FIRs were filed -- one against the three while another against those who assaulted them. The trio have been booked for mischief by killing or maiming cattle and under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act as they were carrying more number of animals in a truck than rules permit.
The men had legal transit papers for transporting the animals.
A police source told CNN-News18 that the attackers weren't gau rakshaks. The vehicle was intercepted by PFA activists.
“A case under section 429 IPC read with 11 Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act has been registered on the complaint of PFA members. And on the statement of vehicle driver Rizwan another case has been registered under 323/341/34 of the IPC at Kalkaji police station," Delhi South-East DCP Romila Baniya said in a statement.
Sources said that some of members of PFA were loitering around the site but they left the spot as soon as police arrived.
