CHENNAI: The multi super-speciality hospital to be established at Omandurar Government Estate here is likely to begin functioning in May this year.Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday reviewed progress of works being carried out to transform the huge building—planned by the previous government as the Secretariat-cum-Assembly complex—into one that is suited for a hospital. Although the CM has been insisting that the new healthcare institution become a reality at the earliest, the minimum process time required for the Public Works Department to carry out alteration works on the building and the purchase of state-of-the-art medical equipment will take till May.The total usable area of 47,491.48 sq mts will house eight departments with 30 beds each and an ICU with 60 beds. The eight departments are cardiology, cardio- thoracic vascular surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, medical and surgical oncology, radiation oncology, medical and surgical endocrinology and hand reconstructive surgery. The idea behind selection of the disciplines is to provide only super-speciality treatment at this hospital and not repeat those available in other government hospitals in the city.To carry out the basic changes on the structure of the buildings, a builder will be chosen by inviting tenders. An estimated cost of `26 crore is likely to be spent on this. The state-of-the-art medical equipment to be purchased for the hospital is expected to cost Rs 40 crore.
