Treat Chennai as home: Mayor to residents
Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy promises better roads in few days and urges Chennaiites to keep the city clean.

CHENNAI: If residents treat the city as they treat their own home, a chunk of problems can be solved, said Mayor of Chennai Corporation, Saidai S Duraisamy. Speaking at the inauguration of the Raja Annamalai Puram Residents Welfare Association here on Sunday, he said that the cleanliness of their surrounding was in their hands.

After having stated that the Chennai Corporation lacked basic facilities when he and his team took up office, the Mayor added that they were now working towards providing these facilities as soon as possible. He also said that the public had to change its apathy towards civic issues.

Listing the improvement works in the pipeline, the Mayor said, “Roads are bad because the plastic and concrete road laying works which were started by the ADMK government in their previous tenure have been stopped. The Honorable Chief Minister has now stipulated that only such roads should be laid.” Over 1,600 plastic roads and 30 concrete roads will be laid over the next few days, he said.

The Corporation is also working towards creating an environment where garbage will not be seen on the roads, but will be collected in hidden trash cans. This will be implemented in the next 15 to 20 days, said the Mayor. Garbage segregation at source and collection of the segregated garbage will also start soon.

The Mayor exhorted the members of the association to look for suitable areas to plant trees. A tree planting drive covering the entire Corporation is scheduled to take place on February 24, he said. The committee members of the association were honoured by the Mayor at the inaugural function, and future plans were discussed.
