Ahmedabad: An eye each of two persons had to be surgically removed after they developed complications following an alleged botched-up cataract operation at a private hospital.

Of the three patients admitted to Regional Institute of Opthalmology at the Civil Hospital, two men lost one of their eyes due to excessive damage, said Dr Somesh Aggarwal of the institute.

The two were identified as Prakash Vyas (52) and Ranjit Rathod (52), both from Bhavangar. The third patient, Mahesh Dhameliya, is under observation.

The patients told the doctors that they were operated at the hospital run by a private trust at Timbi in Bhavnagar district for cataract a few days ago. Later they developed complications. Rathod and Vyas got admitted here on Monday while Dhameliya got admitted on Tuesday, said Dr Aggarwal.

"We found that eyes of Rathod and Vyas were severely damaged due to a complication called 'melting of cornea'. To stop the infection from spreading to other eye, we removed one eye of both patients," said Aggarwal, adding Dhameliya's eye could be saved as his condition improved after medication.

Talking to media, Vyas claimed at least eight persons who were operated at the Timbi-based hospital for cataract developed similar complications.
