Uncertainty over next Naval Chief after Admiral DK Joshi's resignation
Taking moral responsibility for the INS Sindhuratna mishap in which two officers were killed, Admiral DK Joshi had resigned on Wednesday.

New Delhi: After Admiral DK Joshi resigned as the Chief of Naval staff taking moral responsibility for the INS Sindhuratna mishap in which two officers were killed, questions are being raised on who will be the next chief.

According to seniority, Vice Admiral Shekhar Sinha, Commander-in-Chief (FOC-in-C), Western Naval Command is the first in line. His retirement is due on August 31, 2014. But if Admiral Joshi had continued in office and completed his term 18 months later, Vice Admiral Satish Soni would have been the next in line for the post. Vice Admiral Satish Soni is due to retire on March 29, 2016.

Vice Admiral Robin Dhowan, currently the Vice Chief, is also in line for the top post. However, the stumbling block for him is that he has not been a Navy Commander - which is an unwritten requirement for any chief. Vice Admiral Robin Dhowan retires on May 31, 2014.

Also in line is Vice Admiral Anil Chopra, CNC of the Eastern Naval Command, who retires on March 31, 2015.

The consultations over the succession line have begun as the government has accepted Admiral Joshi's resignation with immediate effect.
