CHENNAI: The books printed under the Uniform Syllabus for School Education Act by the previous (DMK) regime contained only propoganda materials, allegedly to glorify party's leader, Advocate General A Navaneethakrishnan asserted in the Madras High Court on Thursday.
When the arguments on the batch of writ pleas for and against the Act commenced before the First Bench comprising CJ MY Eqbal and Justice TS Sivagnanam, Navaneethakrishnan produced the books in support of his claim and claimed that the materials in the books were not worth for study by the students. "They have written about themselves. They were only advertisement materials at the cost of the State exchequer. The younger minds should not be poiticised,'' he added. When the Bench pointed out that a huge expenditure of `200 crore had been incurred for printing the books, Krishnan said that the future of the younger generation was more important.The books contained the pictures of the then CM and his writings. Halfapage had been devoted to the Chennai Sangamam. The person manning the Sangamam had involvement in a scam, he pointed out, and added that the then CM and his kith and kin had wasted the money. Presently, only CBSE students were competing at the national and international levels. The object of the present government was to enhance the quality of education. After prima facie finding that the syllabus was inferior in nature, the government took the policy decision, he said.
