KOCHI: A statewide racket was busted by the city police on Monday after its members were found to be selling and mortgaging cars which they had taken on rent.
The racket used to make fake RC books with the support of insiders in the Regional Transport Office (RTO), to sell the vehicles.The arrested are Sudheer, 36, of Fort Kochi, Sajikumar, 36, of Kollam, Shibu, 30, of Kollam, Shajahan, 41, of Thiruvananthapuram and Babu, 54, of Thiruvananthapuram. The racket was busted by a team led by Kadavanthra SubInspector S Ananthalal as per the directives of City Police Commissioner M R Ajith Kumar and DCP P A Valsan.

The police said the activities of the racket were unearthed during a routine vehicle check.

On a detailed probe, it was ascertained that the engine and the chasis numbers of the Innova car were tampered with and they had managed to make a fake RC book for the vehicle from Thiruvananthapuram with the support of Shajahan, who was said to be an agent in the RTO Office. The police said the racket had so far sold over nine vehicles, mainly Indica and Maruti cars.
