Vendors again encroach on Gandhi Bazar footpath

It may be recalled that BBMP along with the help of local police had razed the vendors in January this year. The vendors had even held a protest for a long time. But now, they are back filling the footpath of Gandhi Bazaar. When City Express spoke to the vendors who have occupied the footpaths again, they said they were given ‘special permission’ to carry out their business by Sunkenahalli Councillor, Sadashiva. But when contacted, Sadashiva denied giving any such permission.Vendors allege that there are more than one hundred vendors who sell flowers, fruits and vegetables. But the Palike has given space for only 28 shops. A vendor asks, “How do they justify this count? I cannot wait and run from pillar to post for a shop in some distant market with no buyers. We do not have much opportunities. With no proper education and skills, we have to resort to street vending, if not for begging.”Meanwhile Councillor Sadashiva said that once the sewerage works are completed,  BBMP has plans to allot 6x4 sq ft shop for about 50 authorised vendors on the footpath. “This system will not disturb the pedestrians,” he said. However, vendors do not have any faith in the BBMP. “We have been doing the same business for generations and have no other option. We have lost faith in BBMP and do not believe that they will help us. We are ready to pay rent for the shops.
