KOZHIKODE: Wading along the water on inflated tyre tubes is not a kind of water sport at Kareetuparamba, a small village in Koduvally panchayat in Kozhikode district. For nearly 50 families at Kareetuparamba, this is the most viable and easiest mode of access to the nearest town.
They use tyre tubes to cross the Nadamulkadavu river to reach Nedumulpoyil town at Omasserry panchayat everyday. The reason a dispute between the two panchayats on arranging boat service! For the past several years, Koduvally panchayat has been arranging boat service during the monsoon season.
But now, both Koduvally and Omasserry panchayats are at loggerheads on arranging the boat service. Hence people have resorted to their own way of transportation. "Now both the panchayats are saying it is not their responsibility to operate boat services which resulted in the cancellation of the service conducted by the Koduvally panchayat during the previous monsoon season," Naawaz, a resident of the area, said.Kunhayi, who owns a flour mill on the other side of the river says, "we are risking our life by taking this kind of adventure. But now, we are well experienced in crossing the river using the tubes and even school going children have mastered the art."The state government sanctioned funds a year ago for constructing a bridge across the river. But the project has not materialised owing to disputes between the panchayats on the issue. On the other hand, Omasserry Panchayat president K M Komalavalli says that there is a dispute but it is the responsibility of the Koduvally panchayath to solve the issue by constructing a bridge using the fund allocated for it.
