KOCHI: Lately, the Vyttila region of the city has been making news for being an accident-prone area. According to traffic police officials, a minimum of four accidents occur here every month, in which at least one person is killed.Traffic sub-inspector (Edappally region) Aboobacker said that the Vyttila Mobility Hub region, areas between Palluruthy Bridge and Thykoodam Bridge, and Janatha Junction and the power house are considered to be accident-prone due to uncontrolled traffic movement. He added that there has been an increase in the flow of heavy traffic here resulting in creased number of accidents. He said the most of these accidents are occurring due to sheer carelessness of the commuters, especially car drivers. Also, traffic jams are frequent here. Most people are seen to be in a hurry to avoid traffic blocks, leading to accidents, said the traffic police officials. As an initiative to curb accidents and cut down on the traffic flow in the region, Aboobacker said that the traffic police have rescheduled the stoppage timings at the signals.“The area witnesses a heavy traffic flow between 9 am and 11 am from Tripunithura  and between 4.30 pm and 6.30 pm from Ernakulam. Therefore, we have increased the stoppage timing for the vehicles at the signals to suit the peak hours,” he said.He said that Kanniyam Puzha Road and Thamanam Junction does not have traffic assistants and need zebra crossings. He also said that the area needs additional police force.
