"SIMI is a banned organisation. It has no office overground. The state government has ordered a crackdown on it."
Kolkata: With the needle of suspicion pointing at the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) for the serial blasts in Mumbai, the West Bengal government ordered a crackdown on the proscribed organisation on Thursday in the state.
"SIMI is a banned organisation. It has no office overground. The state government ordered a crackdown on it," Home secretary Prasad Ranjan Roy said at the secretariat here.
The Home secretary also said wherever Islamic militants were active, SIMI might also be playing a part. SIMI and its ally Bangladesh-based Harkat-ul-Jehad- al-Islami were reportedly active in some districts in the state and neighbouring Assam, intelligence sources said.
