We respect people's verdict: Vaiko
Vaiko said his party would discharge its democratic function of a responsible opposition party in the assembly.

Chennai: MDMK General Secretary Vaiko on Thursday said he respected the people's verdict in the May 8 elections to Tamil Nadu assembly.

In a statement, Vaiko said his party would discharge its democratic function of a responsible opposition party in the assembly.

He had switched his party's alliance from the DMK-led DPA to AIADMK.

He observed that compared to the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, the DMK Front's vote bank had strongly eroded. In fact, in many constituencies, the Democratic People's Front led by the ruling AIADMK had lost by narrow margins.

This showed that there was no anti-incumbency against the ruling AIADMK, he claimed.

He alleged that the DMK had indulged in one-sided presentation of the issues before the people with the help of its television channel.

Vaiko also pointed out that the AIADMK had emerged as the main opposition party with the highest number of seats since the days of the Madras Province.

This will soon bring about a new turn in the favour of the front led by the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu politics, he claimed.

He also stressed that it would soon be proved that the poll promises and freebies with which the DMK had "mesmerised the voters" were impractical.
