West Bengal’s Murshidabad shares a long history with mangoes. The demand for mangoes which started during the Mughal era, especially during ruler Akbar’s reign is still relevant in India. The mangoes are grown all over India, especially in West Bengal, Gujarat and Deccan regions. Of all the available varieties, Bengal mangoes were the most popular, especially from Murshidabad’s Azimganj and Jiaganj. Many varieties of mangoes which were available during the Mughal period couldn’t survive the changing times and now Gopalkhas and Champa are among the few types of mangoes which are available in the market. These varieties are too standing on the endangered stage.

Mango cultivators in Murshidabad claim that even though a tree in the Nawabi era had two quintals, this year the tree does not have 50 kg of mangoes. Champa mango which is famous for its rosy taste is one of the ancient mangoes of Bengal. It has a reddish tinge of rose colour.

The yield of these mangoes is low this year, but the farmers believe that the price will surge when it reaches the market. Champa mangoes are reportedly sold at a high price per piece. It is highly aromatic. Champa and Gopalkhas are often in demand due to their taste and aroma and it is exported by the government of India to foreign countries.

According to reports, the Nawabs of Murshidabad brought different varieties of mango trees from India and foreign countries. They planted them in their gardens. It is believed that there were more than 200 species of mango trees in the gardens of the Nawabs. However, with the changing times, many mango orchards were cut to construct buildings and other things. Although, a few mango orchards still exist not all species of mangoes are found in those.
