International Astronomy Day 2024: History, Quotes, and How is AI Changing Astronomy?
International Astronomy Day is a day for astronomy enthusiasts and professionals to share their knowledge and love of outer space with the general public.

The mysteries of outer space and astronomy have fascinated the world for the longest time. The universe is bigger than anyone’s imagination and is full of unanswered mysteries that give us a sense of astonishment. To honour and celebrate the importance of the universe, the world celebrates International Astronomy Day. It is a day for astronomy enthusiasts and professionals to share their knowledge and love of outer space with the general public.

For all astronomy and space enthusiasts, the day is celebrated twice a year in order to observe the events that occur in space. In 2024, International Astronomy Day will be observed on May 18 in the spring and October 12 in the autumn.

International Astronomy Day 2024: History

International Astronomy Day was initiated by Doug Berger in 1973, who was the president of the Astronomical Association of Northern California at the time. He started this day to get people in urban areas to be interested in astronomy. Initially, on the day, telescopes were set up so that people could get access to information related to space.

Gradually, the event started, including the whole world and many organisations. In 2006, the day was amended, and it was decided to celebrate twice a year, one in spring and the other in autumn.

International Astronomy Day 2024: How is AI changing astronomy?

As artificial intelligence progresses every day, AI systems are able to make the field of astronomy faster and more powerful than ever before. It is found that AI is a broad term and has many diverse tools, but astronomers mostly use neural networks.

These neural networks learn information about outer space through the already-available facts and then make connections with the present data. One of the most prominent examples of AI in astronomy is the images that come from space.

For instance, an image of the supermassive black hole at the heart of the galaxy Messier 87 (M87) was first released in 2019. At that time, the image was not clear. But it was given an AI makeover in April 2023, resulting in a much clearer image of the black hole’s structure.

Another way that astronomers use AI for astronomy is to classify the images of space to specify them into galaxies. The information related to galaxies is stored in manual assignments, either done by the researchers themselves or by volunteer science citizens.

Apart from that, it also helps in understanding life on Mars and reveals the ages of stars.

International Astronomy Day 2024: Quotes

  1. Astronomy is useful because it raises us above ourselves; it is useful because it is grand; It shows us how small is man’s body, how great his mind, since his intelligence can embrace the whole of this dazzling immensity, where his body is only an obscure point, and enjoy its silent harmony.” – Henri Poincare, Physicist
  2. “Mortal as I am, I know that I am born for a day, but when I follow the serried multitude of the stars in their circular course, my feet no longer touch the earth; I ascend to Zeus himself to feast me on ambrosia, the food of the gods.” – Ptolemy, Astronomer
  3. “The cosmos is all that is or ever was or ever will be. Our feeblest contemplations of the Cosmos stir us — there is a tingling in the spine, a catch in the voice, a faint sensation, as if a distant memory, or falling from a height. We know we are approaching the greatest of mysteries.” – Carl Sagan, Astronomer
  4. Space isn’t remote at all. It’s only an hour’s drive away, if your car could go straight upwards.” – Sir Fred Hoyle, Astronomer
  5. “Man must rise above the Earth — to the top of the atmosphere and beyond — for only thus will he fully understand the world in which he lives.” – Socrates, Philosopher.
