Every month, there are two Ekadashi dates: one in Krishna Paksha and the other in Shukla Paksha. The Ekadashi in the Shukla Paksha of the Magh month is known as Jaya Ekadashi.
This year, Jaya Ekadashi falls on February 20. The Ekadashi fast begins at sunrise and concludes the following day on Dwadashi tithi. It is believed that observing a fast and worshipping Lord Vishnu on Ekadashi brings happiness, prosperity and the blessings of Lord Vishnu.
The Ekadashi fast holds special significance in Sanatan Dharma. As per the Panchang, the Tithi for Jaya Ekadashi will begin at 08:49 AM on February 19 and end at 09:55 AM on the following day, i.e., February 20. Therefore, the Jaya Ekadashi fast is observed on February 20.
On the auspicious day of Jaya Ekadashi, start your day by awakening during Brahma Muhurta and meditating on Lord Vishnu. Brahma Muhurta is referred to as the time frame of 48 mins between 1 hour and 36 mins and 48 mins before sunrise.
Then, take a bath and dress in yellow attire.
Proceed to cleanse and sanctify the temple area with Ganga water.
Light a ghee lamp and offer worship to Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi, the protectors of the world, by presenting flowers, incense, lamps, basil leaves, sandalwood and sweets.
Recite stotras dedicated to Lord Vishnu and read the story associated with Ekadashi fasting.
Conclude the puja by performing the aarti of Lord Vishnu and offering bhog.
Finally, share Prasad among the devotees as a symbol of blessings and prosperity.
On the day of Ekadashi, it is important to abstain from consuming non-vegetarian food, alcohol and intoxicants. Refrain from engaging in arguments or conflicts with others, and avoid using abusive language. Additionally, it is advised not to touch the Tulsi plant unintentionally on this day. It is recommended to remain awake during the Ekadashi fast, as sleeping may lead to feelings of guilt.
Observing a fast on Jaya Ekadashi bestows the blessings of Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi upon the devotee. This leads to an atmosphere of happiness, peace and prosperity in the household. Fasting on Ekadashi is believed to purify the soul and erase one’s sins. It also offers protection from ghosts and alleviates fear. By observing this fast, devotees seek relief from various challenges in life, as it is believed that God eliminates all kinds of problems for those who observe Ekadashi with devotion.
