Why Heart Attacks Are On The Rise In India
Dr Ashwini Mehta, Cardiologist, Gangaram Hospital, says the lipid profile is the total cholesterol.

In recent times, heart attacks have become a common problem. Earlier, heart illnesses were known to afflict only older people, but now such issues have been increasing among youngsters as well. While the deaths of teenagers due to heart attacks are an unfortunate trend, doctors across several states have shared that parents and teachers need to recognise, prevent and treat these sudden events. Overall, nowadays, incidents related to heart attacks have increased. Have you ever wondered why this happens?

The Cardiological Society of India has found the answer to why such incidents are common nowadays. Apart from this, the Cardiological Society of India has for the first time issued guidelines for people to be aware of this silent killer and to avoid heart attacks. Let’s take a look.

Lipid guidelines have recently been published by the Indian Cardiological Society. JPS Sawhney, Director of the Cardiology Department at Sir Gangaram Hospital, said that diabetes, high blood pressure, stress, smoking, and alcoholism are common causes of heart attacks. In contrast, dyslipidemia is considered to be the leading cause of heart attacks in India. It increases the risk of clogged arteries, heart attack, and stroke. Abnormally high levels of cholesterol or lipids in the blood are referred to as dyslipidemia. About 80 per cent of people in India have an abnormal lipid profile, and people are not aware enough of it.

Lipid profile:

Dr. Ashwini Mehta, cardiologist at Gangaram Hospital, says the lipid profile is the total cholesterol. The higher the cholesterol level in your body, the higher your risk of a heart attack, regardless of age. Good cholesterol, bad cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, lipoprotein, and triglyceride are included in the lipid profile.

Cholesterol test:

Dr. Ramakrishnan shared that everyone needs to get their cholesterol or lipid profile checked at least once to avoid a heart attack. Everyone over the age of 40 should undergo this test. On the other hand, if anyone in your family has had a heart attack or it is a genetic disease, he insists on getting a lipid profile test done right away, regardless of age.

Don’t be indifferent:

Many are reluctant to take the medicines prescribed by the doctor after it is known that the cholesterol level is dangerous. But this is not correct as per Dr. Ramakrishnan; whatever medicines the doctor prescribes, they should be taken. Guidelines clearly state that both stenin and non-stenin drugs are effective in maintaining lipid profiles.
