Sanjay Leela Bhansali has addressed ongoing rumours surrounding his highly anticipated film Love And War, which stars Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, the director confirmed that his latest project is not a remake of the 1964 classic Sangam, putting speculation to rest.
“You should not remake Sholay or Mother India. So, why would I remake Sangam?” Bhansali remarked, dismissing the speculation. The filmmaker revealed that Love And War is very special to him and, unlike his previous films, it has no period setting, extravagant costumes or grand sets. “It’s contemporary. The music is different. It’s a new space for me, and I’m enjoying it.”
Despite the rumours, Bhansali made it clear that this film is something entirely original, marking his reunion with Ranbir Kapoor after 18 years. “It’s exciting to work with Ranbir again,” he shared. Bhansali last collaborated with the actor on Saawariya (2007), and he is eager to showcase Ranbir in a new light.
Bhansali also heaped praise on his other leading stars. Alia Bhatt, who starred in his National Award-winning Gangubai Kathiawadi, is back in the mix, and the director admits he still has a lot more to explore with her. “There’s still so much to tap into with Alia. She’s a powerhouse,” Bhansali said fondly. As for Vicky Kaushal, this will be his first time working with the celebrated director.
Describing the emotional connection he shares with the cast, Bhansali emphasised how important this film is for him. However, he cautioned fans that he wants to take his time with it, as it is a challenging project. “It’s a difficult film for me, so I’m being careful. I won’t take my actors, myself, or the audience for granted,” he explained.
While fans are eager to see the movie, they’ll have to wait a little longer. Love And War is slated for a March 2026 release.
