New photos of actor Chris Evans and Dakota Johnson have emerged from the set of their upcoming film titled Materialists. It is being shot in New York. The film revolves around a matchmaker, her ex-boyfriend and an affluent businessman. The set photos show Evans looking like a stunner in a dark blue shirt, black jacket and olive pants, paired with white shoes. He wears “geek-chic” glasses that give him a nerdy but fashionable look. Dakota on the other hand wears a cream button-down with a black miniskirt. Her other look consists of a black jumper with blue jeans.
Materialist is finally being shot after the production company decided to pause the shooting last year in light of the SAG-AFTRA strikes. The film is being co-produced by 2AM and A24. It has Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal and Dakota Johnson in the lead role. Other actors, Zoë Winters, Dasha Nekrasova, Louisa Jacobson and Marin Ireland are also part of the cast.

Materialist is Oscar-nominated writer and director Celine Song’s second film after her first film was the critically and commercially acclaimed Past Lives. In a 2023 interview with GQ, Song and Materialist producer Christine Vachon did not reveal much about the plot of Materialists. However, Christine Vachon offered a little hint and said, “It feels like she makes a different movie every time, that she’s going to be the kind of a filmmaker who doesn’t make the same movie twice.” He added that Materialist “couldn’t be further connected to Past Lives.”
According to World of Reel, the upcoming film is inspired by James L. Brooks’s rom-coms like Broadcast News and Terms of Endearment. The film’s plot summary goes like this, “Set against the vibrant backdrop of New York City, a city that never sleeps and is known for its diverse and dynamic relationships, “Materialists” provides a unique glimpse into the lives of the city’s elite. Lucy’s expertise in matchmaking is highly sought after by those willing to pay a premium for her services. However, the film hints at complications that arise, leading to a toxic love triangle that threatens to unravel the lives of all involved.”
Song’s debut film Past Lives was nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at the 96th Academy Awards. Even though it did not win an Oscar, the drama cemented Song as a master filmmaker. It will be interesting to see if the 35-year-old director manages to replicate the success of Past Lives with Materialist.
