Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine continues its impressive box office journey and has surpassed several key milestones in just its third weekend of release. The film, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in the lead roles, has been a major success for Marvel Studios, particularly after a series of less successful releases in the recent past. Despite getting tough competition from the romantic drama It Ends with Us, which also has Reynolds’ wife and voice for Lady Deadpool, Blake Lively in the lead role. The film held strong at the top of the box office charts. It has now earned $495 million (approx 3,775 crores) domestically and an additional $535 million (approx. 4491 crores) from international markets, bringing its global total to $1.03 billion (approx. 8266 Crores).
This puts Deadpool & Wolverine in a group of Marvel films that have grossed over $1 (approx. 7500 crores) billion worldwide. It is also the only MCU film after Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) to be able to reach this feat. The MCU crossover is on track to surpass Joker’s lifetime earnings too, which would make it the highest-grossing R-rated film in global box office history. Domestically, the film had already achieved a milestone by surpassing The Passion of the Christ’s domestic haul, according to Collider.
Deadpool & Wolverine has also reportedly outperformed several other Marvel blockbusters, including Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. At present, only 10 other MCU films have previously reached the $1 billion mark.
In terms of its total worldwide collection, currently, Deadpool & Wolverine is trailing behind Captain Marvel, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Captain America: Civil War, Iron Man 3, Black Panther, Avengers: Age of Ultron, The Avengers, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
In the domestic market, the film has already overtaken Captain Marvel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Avengers: Age of Ultron. It is now the sixth highest-grossing MCU film in domestic box office history, with the potential to break into the top five by surpassing The Avengers and its domestic total, informs Collider. Given the film’s remarkable performance and the positive audience reception, fans can expect the film to be able to do so.
Directed by Shawn Levy, who has previously collaborated with both Reynolds and Jackman, Deadpool & Wolverine was reportedly produced on a budget of $200 million (approx. 1,640 crores). The film introduces these fan-favourite characters into the MCU following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, which plays a significant role in the film’s storyline. Deadpool & Wolverine was released on July 26 and is in theaters right now.
