Gippy Grewal REVEALS Amar Singh Chamkila Unveiled 'Baba Tera Nankana' During His First Akhada Visit
Gippy Grewal recalled witnessing Amar Singh Chamkila's performance live on stage during one of the akhadas.

In a recent release on Netflix by Imtiaz Ali, ‘Amar Singh Chamkila,’ featuring Diljit Dosanjh, has captured the attention of actor-singer Gippy Grewal along with many others. During an interview, Gippy reminisced about his childhood days attending the akhadas of Amar Singh Chamkila and mentioned that almost every renowned singer from Punjab has, at some point, performed Chamkila’s songs on stage.

Gippy praised the film and commended Imtiaz for his casting choices, stating, “Leave Diljit aside, even the rest of the people, he looked for such great people,” He revealed that all the prominent Punjabi singers, including himself and Diljit, have sung Chamkila’s songs live. According to Gippy, anyone claiming otherwise would be dishonest. He even confessed to recording a few of Chamkila’s tracks.

Recalling his youth, Gippy mentioned that his first encounter with Chamkila’s akhada was a memorable one. He noted that the portrayal of the akhadas in the movie closely resembled real-life events. He recounted, “In the movie, the way they have shown the akhadas, that’s how they happened in real life too.”

Gippy recounted how Chamkila unveiled the songwriter Swaran Sivia at one such akhada, performing his first devotional track, ‘Baba Tera Nankana,’ even before it was officially recorded. Reflecting on the film’s depiction, Gippy mentioned the shift Chamkila made towards devotional music following threats from militant groups due to the perceived vulgarity of his earlier work. Despite initial controversies, his devotional songs also gained immense popularity.

Gippy is currently engaged in promoting his upcoming film, ‘Shinda Shinda No Papa,’ where he shares the screen with his son, Shinda Grewal.

Meanwhile, speaking about Amar Singh Chamkila, the movie captures the essence of its title in every conceivable way, weaving a narrative that is both intriguing and haunting. The film openly explores the life of Amar Singh Chamkila, an artist celebrated for his entertaining, festive, and provocative work, whose career tragically ended in assassination at the age of 27.

News18 gave the film 3.5/5 stars. Our review of the film read, “Diljit delivers a stupendous act as the protagonist. The character of Amar Singh Chamkila is tailor-made for him and he pours his heart out into it. His hard work is palpable and yet his performance is effortless. Watching him become Chamkila and sing his songs will fill your heart up with unadulterated joy. Even in some heavy-weight scenes, he brings a rare restraint to the fore and renders a whole new layer of poise. It, inarguably, is his career-best performance. And somewhere in the middle, you will see him becoming one with Chamkila and very soon, you won’t be able to separate these forces that forever changed the music industry of Punjab.”
