Ilaiyaraaja And IIT Madras Join Hands For Centre For Music Learning And Research
Ilaiyaraaja laid the foundation stone for the centre, called the IITM- Maestro Ilaiyaraaja Centre for Music Learning and Research on Monday.

Ilaiyaraaja is regarded as one of the most influential and illustrious music personalities in the country. The legend is now set to expand his talents in the form of education with IIT Madras. The institute and the musician are going to collaborate on a research centre.

The musician laid the foundation stone for the centre, called the IITM- Maestro Ilaiyaraaja Centre for Music Learning and Research on Monday. As per reports, it was done during the inauguration ceremony of the Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth or SPIC MACAY, hosted by the institute.

At the event, Ilaiyaraaja interacted with the crowd, stating that this place is going to give birth to 200 “Raajas”. He said, “Music is my breath. It comes naturally to me…it happens naturally. I came to Chennai from a village with a desire to learn music…but now I am starting a music learning centre at IIT Madras.”

The director of IIT-M V Kamakoti expressed his joy for the new collaboration. He stated, “We are going to research music with the maestro Ilaiyaraaja.” Mentioning the centre, he added, “Like Beethoven, like the musicians of 200 years ago, we are about to make a huge musical revolution with this Centre.” The Governor of Tripura Indirasena Reddy Nallu also attended the event and laid the foundation stone.

The Indian Institute of Madras is in the middle of hosting a society, which aims at promoting Indian classical music and culture, the SPIC MACAY. It is a part of the institute’s 9th annual international convention. The festival started on May 20 and will continue till May 26, around 1,500 students are attending the event including volunteers from across the country and the world.

In his four-decade-old career, Ilaiyaraaja has worked in more than 1,000 films as a musician and composed more than 7,000 songs. Some of his upcoming works include Viduthalai Part 2, Thupparivaalan 2, Mareechika and many more.
