A recent report appears to confirm a massive change in the upcoming third season of HBO’s hit series, Euphoria. Following delays caused by last year’s writers’ and actors’ strikes, fans have been eagerly waiting for the news about the fate of their beloved characters. For months, speculation has been going around that the new season will feature a time jump, as characters will graduate from high school and move into their adult life. According to reports from Variety, HBO has granted showrunner Sam Levinson the freedom to shift Euphoria’s story away from high school. While production was initially set to begin soon, the studio has announced a delay and allowed the cast, including Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi, to explore other acting opportunities.
When Levinson submitted his updated scripts in early 2024, HBO executives were not satisfied with the changes. They were especially dissatisfied with a new storyline for Zendaya’s character, Rue. Initially, Rue had a subplot where she worked as a private detective, but HBO didn’t like that and turned down the idea. The actress then suggested a different idea where Rue, now a young sober woman, becomes a pregnancy surrogate. However, insiders felt that these new scripts didn’t match the show’s overall tone. Because of all these creative disagreements, HBO considered different options, including the possibility of Levinson leaving Euphoria, but the team is committed to complete the series with the original showrunner.
Reports also suggest that along with HBO, Zendaya also showed concern regarding Sam Levinson’s proposed concepts for season 3, due to which he has revised scripts multiple times. The studio reportedly found Levinson’s initial pitch promising, especially the storylines for Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi’s engaging plot. However, once the WGA strike concluded and complete scripts were submitted, they didn’t align with Zendaya’s character. Although the young actress can’t reject the scripts, the Spider-Man actress did provide Levinson with some ideas about what she’d prefer for Season 3. Sources suggest that Levinson was already revising the scripts due to the unfortunate passing of actor Angus Cloud and producer Kevin Turen, which made things even slower.
As per reports, Zendaya has not yet read Levinson’s new scripts. However, sources indicate that the possibility of a third season of Euphoria is not completely off the table. As of now, HBO has cleared the cast’s schedules for the rest of 2024 but asked them to be present by October 1 to commence filming in 2025. Unlike the previous seasons, the third season may not include eight episodes as makers are planning to shoot just six episodes.
