One Direction’s Liam Payne, 31, passed away on October 16 in Argentina. While it was initially reported that he fell off his hotel balcony in Argentina, a new statement by the Buenos Aires Security Ministry revealed that Liam Payne ‘had jumped from the balcony of his room’. Local police confirmed the incident occurred at a hotel on Costa Rica Street in Palermo.

According to reports from local newspapers La Nacion and Clarin, police were summoned to the hotel in Buenos Aires’ Palermo neighborhood after receiving an emergency call about “an aggressive man who might be under the influence of drugs and alcohol.”

Liam Payne’s sudden death has left fans across the globe shocked and heartbroken. In response, many have taken to social media to commemorate his life and career, sharing old videos from his X Factor journey, the show that first propelled him into the spotlight. These clips highlight the key moments of his rise to fame, including his audition and his eventual formation as part of One Direction. Fans have been reflecting on his musical journey, celebrating his achievements while mourning the loss.

Liam Payne’s X Factor journey began in 2008 when, at the age of 14, he first auditioned for the show. Though he impressed the judges, Simon Cowell felt he needed more experience and advised him to come back in two years. In 2010, Payne returned, performing “Cry Me a River,” earning a standing ovation and strong praise from the judges.

During the boot camp stage of that season, Payne’s path changed significantly when he was grouped with four other solo contestants—Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson—to form One Direction. Simon Cowell and the other judges believed their collective potential outweighed their individual efforts. Though One Direction finished third in the competition, they quickly signed with Cowell’s Syco Music label and went on to achieve massive global success, becoming one of the best-selling boy bands of all time.

He is survived by his son, born in 2017, whom he shared with singer Cheryl Cole.
