The Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) is currently at the centre of attraction after the Hema Committee Report was released last week. After a series of sexual misconduct allegations emerged against several male industry members, including some within AMMA, the organisation’s office bearer resigned en masse. Similarly, director Ranjith had to resign from the chairman post of Chalcitra Film Academy following allegations of sexual harassment against him. With the international film festival to be organised in December, the academy needs to appoint a chairman as soon as possible.
After the resignation, editor Beena Paul’s name was in discussion to become the next president. She has held several positions including artistic director of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) and the vice chairperson of Kerala State Chalchitra Academy. However, according to reports, director and filmmaker Shaji N Karun is being considered for the position of chairperson. Amid this, actress Parvathy Thiruvothu took a stand for Beena Paul for the position of chairperson in Kerala Chalchitra Academy
Parvathy Thiruvothu has responded to Shaji N Karun’s statement and said that Paul is ready to take over the post of the president of the Film Academy if requested by the state government. “There will be no need for such magnanimity, sir. Perhaps, you can also make sure that the person who has all the qualifications to be in the position gets it. The world will not end with a woman taking over. Beena Paul for the chairperson of the film academy,” Parvathy noted in her recent Instagram story.
After the Hema Committee report, when there were widespread allegations of sexism in the film industry, a woman president was suggested for the academy. The name of the editor and one of the WCC founders, Bina Paul was considered for the same. She has served as an artistic director for a long time in IFFK.
As per the latest updates, the government is planning to exclude Bina and appoint Shaji N Karun as the chairman. Shaji N Karun is currently the chairman of Film Development Corporation. A group of people had come forward with a campaign against the appointment of Bina Paul as the president of Chalchitra Film Academy.
