Shawn Mendes has opened up about his relationship with ex-girlfriend Camila Cabello, revealing that they still care for each other despite their breakup. While appearing on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, Mendes described their on-and-off romance as brutal but confessed that they share a special bond. The singer explained that they have managed to keep their “private little fire of love" alive and also mentioned that he avoids reading fans’ opinions about his love life online. He claimed that both of them know how to protect their relationship and never cross boundaries.
Speaking with Jay, Mendes said, “Camila and I have just done the best job at preserving our private little fire of love for each other. Because no matter how strong mentally you are, when there are millions of people commenting on it, it’s so hard not to be affected by it, to be swayed by it, to be inspired by it, and to desire it. I have worked extremely hard to just protect each other and protect that love, and I’ve learned a lot about that. It’s part of it, and there’s no getting away from that. I don’t really go on social media anymore, so I don’t really see or care what people say about my love life or my relationships. I’ve become pretty strict on that part of it."
Shawn Mendes also emphasised that genuine love is not as straightforward as portrayed in films; it can be complicated and challenging. For Mendes and Cabello, open and honest communication has been crucial to their relationship. He noted that if something felt amiss or unclear, they were quick to address it, helping to prevent misunderstandings. He highlighted that they both make a concerted effort to text each other, demonstrating the care they have for one another.
“We’re very young, so I think at this point we hopefully just have a great deep respect. So I don’t think either of us would ever cross a line. We deeply respect each other. I’m just lucky she’s an amazing human being and she’s incredibly understanding, thoughtful and caring. So communicating with her is not difficult, and I think that’s just probably a huge part of it," the singer added.
