This Malayalam Movie 2nd On 'Top 25 Horror Films Of 2024' List

Malayalam cinema has been on a remarkable trajectory in 2024, experiencing one of its most successful years yet. The industry has garnered acclaim not only for its artistic films but also for its strong box-office performances. Numerous films released this year have achieved worldwide recognition, significantly enhancing the outlook for the regional cinema industry. What makes 2024 stand out is that eight of the top 20 highest-grossing Malayalam films of all time were released during this year alone. This demonstrates a perfect balance of critical and commercial success, a rarity for any regional industry.

The industry has also been receiving recognition internationally with Manjummel Boys recently having been screened at KinoBravo Russian film festival as a contender. Now, yet another Malayalam film, starring one of the industry’s biggest stars Mammootty has also received recognition. It has landed a top spot in a list highlighting the best films from around the world in a specific genre.

In the recently released ‘Top 25 Horror Films of 2024’ by Letterboxd, a popular online platform for film cataloguing, the 2024 Malayalam film Bramayugam has impressively secured the second position. Directed by Rahul Sadasivan, Bramayugam is a period folk horror film that stars Mammootty in the lead role. The film has been met with widespread acclaim for its atmospheric storytelling and Mammootty’s riveting performance, cementing its place as one of the standout horror films of the year.

Letterboxd’s rankings are based on the average ratings from its members, and the list will continue to be updated monthly until early 2025. Only publicly released films with a minimum of 1,000 ratings are eligible for inclusion. Bramayugam’s position in such a highly competitive list reflects the growing global recognition of Malayalam cinema, especially in niche genres like horror.

In addition to Bramayugam’s strong showing, director Amar Kaushik’s horror-comedy Stree 2, featuring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, has claimed the 23rd spot. Bramayugam and Stree 2 are the only Indian films on the list.
