Hollywood star Tom Hiddleston is all set to join Jennifer Peedom’s Tenzing, which tells the incredible story of Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and his historic climb of Mount Everest. According to a Deadline report, the Loki star will play Sir Edmund Hillary, the New Zealand mountaineer who became the first climber to reach the Everest summit alongside Tenzing. The film comes from Peedom, who already has the exclusive rights to tell Tenzing’s story through his family and also shares a close relationship with the Sherpa community, after directing 2015’s Sherpa.
Turning out to become a star-studded ensemble, while Hiddleston will play Sir Edmund Hillary, four-time Oscar winner Willem Dafoe has also been roped in to play Colonel John Hunt, Tenzing and Hillary’s English expedition leader.
A search is still underway to find the face to portray the leading role of Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. While the film’s script comes from Oscar-nominated Luke Davies, it will be produced by Liz Watts, Emile Sherman, and Iain Canning under the banner of See-Saw Films. Tenzing is expected to be one of the biggest projects at the upcoming Cannes market, with Rocket Science handling the sales.
The film is expected to commence filming in the spring of 2025.
Director Jennifer Peedom, known for her works Solo, Sherpa, and Mountain, spoke about Tenzing and shared excitement about being a part of the story. “I could not be more thrilled to be bringing Tenzing Norgay’s story to the screen. I’ve been working towards this film my whole career, and I’m incredibly grateful to Tenzing’s family for entrusting me with it. I am excited to work with See-Saw Films and our amazing cast to bring this story to life. Tom Hiddleston and Willem Dafoe are two of the most generous and talented actors in the business, so pairing them with our brilliant Himalayan cast is going to be electric. I have no doubt this film will resonate widely. We all have our own mountains to climb, and this film shows us what human beings are truly capable of,” she told Deadline.
More About Tenzing Norgay
The Tibetan-born mountaineer defied all the odds to achieve the impossible and climbed the world’s tallest mountain, Mount Everest. Tenzing and Edmund Hillary, both outsiders on the British expedition, however, managed to reach the top in 1953.
