‘Wanted To Create Sub-genre Of Mystical Realism': Producer Gnanavel Raja On Thangalaan

Actor Vikram’s latest, Thangalaan is garnering acclaim from the critics as well as the audience, for its unique plot and themes. In a recent media interaction, the producers of the release delved into the making of the film and what they aimed for with it. Let us take a look.

According to the producer K E Gnanavel Raja, Thangalaan has taken a lot from mythology and they wanted to create a sub-genre of mystical realism. The producer stated, “With Thangalaan, we intended to break new ground by creating a sub-genre of Mystical Realism.” He continued, “The film draws heavily from mythology, blending these profound elements with a real story to create something audiences can deeply relate to.”

The producer believes it is an attempt at a new genre, something the audience has never experienced. He added Pa Ranjith and Vikram were the best choices for the project. According to him, they are masters at pushing boundaries and consistently bringing something entirely new to the table.

As per more information given, Thangalaan is inspired by true events, while being woven with elements of mythology. Vikram appears in five roles in the film, portraying the roles of Thangalaan Muni, Kaadaiyan, Thangalaan’s great-grandfather, Arasan also called “Aaran”, Adhi Muni and Naga Muni.

Made under the direction of Pa Ranjith, the film had its theatrical release on August 15. The cast of the film includes Vikram in the titular role along with Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan, Daniel Caltagirone, Pasupathy, Hari Krishnan, Arjun Anbudan and Preeti Karan. It is produced by K E Gnanavel Raja under the banner of Studio Green and Neelam Productions. The music in the film is done by G V Prakash Kumar and the cinematographer is A Kishor Kumar and Selva R K has done the editing. More information states that the film is made under a budget of Rs 100 crore to Rs 150 crore and has so far collected over Rs 65 crore at the box office.
