Actress Sonali Bendre is an actress who has successfully overcome cancer. Even today she is working proficiently in the film industry like before. The actress initially revealed her cancer diagnosis six years ago. During that time, the 49-year-old openly discussed her condition and the path to recovery, motivating countless people and giving other survivors hope. In a podcast for Humans of Bombay, the actress who made a comeback to the big screen on May 3 with the much-awaited ZEE5 series The Broken News 2 openly discussed her struggle with cancer and how she handled the moment that changed her life.
According to a recent interview Sonali stated, “I was given a cancer diagnosis while filming a reality show. It was quite startling. I questioned how I could develop cancer. I initially believed the cancer to be quite tiny, but as the tests progressed, we learned that it was not a little illness when we went to the doctor, had the tests done, and had the cancer identified. My husband and my doctor looked pale when the PET scan was performed.”
Sonali added, “A PET scan revealed the location of cancer cells within your body as well as the extent of their spread. My PET scan results showed that the cancer had grown throughout my body to the point that it resembled a Christmas tree.”
After hearing this she attempted to ignore it by going to sleep. However, even after she woke up, nothing changed. Her husband decided to take her abroad for further treatment, and they left without her child. During this period she used to have a lot of quarrels with family and was getting agitated.
Bendre also said, “While receiving treatment, I lost my temper with the doctors. They told me I had only a thirty per cent chance of surviving. How could the physicians say that I wondered? I asked them repeatedly, “How could I have cancer?”
She became quite irate with the doctor after he gave her a thirty per cent chance of surviving. She now realises that he was speaking truthfully and was correct. Since there is still social stigma associated with talking about cancer, Sonali talked about how important it is to talk about it. The intense treatment was like a nuclear strike to her body. Her body was destroyed and then reconstructed in every way.
She lost her hair as a result of the chemotherapy, and the actress captured it on camera. She described how difficult it was because she felt deeply about her hair. It makes sense that the hair loss would eventually come back, but emotions and conceit are illogical. She was proud of the way her hair looked. At the time, the actress had endorsed every hair product. She struggled to break that attachment with her hair and let it go.
“You take it out on the person you met when you’re not ready to accept something.” However, looking back, I realise that they were merely being honest with me. The truth cannot be altered by anyone.” She added.
After receiving a stage four metastatic cancer diagnosis in 2018, Sonali had therapy in a hospital located in New York City, She declared herself to be in remission and returned to India in January 2019. Bendre has expressed her gratitude for having friends and family to support her and for having access to quality medical care, both of which have been essential to her rehabilitation. She has been an outspoken supporter of cancer awareness and care since her recovery, and she recently shared a touching Instagram post in honour of Cancer Survivors Day in 2021.
Sonali, who has acted in films such as Sarfarish, Hum Saath Saath Hain, and Duplicate, among others, is showcasing her strength and endurance in the face of hardship as she prepares for the release of The Broken News 2. The show, which stars Jaideep Ahlawat and Shriya Pilgaonkar, promises an exciting investigation of the cutthroat journalism industry.
