The Potterheads have a reason to rejoice as there is an update on the much-awaited Harry Potter TV series that was first teased by HBO Max back in April 2023. Deadline Hollywood reported that the Harry Potter series is set to release in 2026. Warner Bros. Discovery finally announced the series last year. The upcoming show will run for 10 seasons over 10 consecutive years. It will stream on HBO Max. As per The Hollywood Reporter, on Friday, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed the series will debut in 2026.
He said, “We’ve not been shy about our excitement around Harry Potter. The last film was made more than a dozen years ago. I was in London a few weeks ago with Casey Bloys (the CEO of HBO) and Channing Dungey (chairperson of Warner Bros Television) and we spent some real time with JK (JK Rowling) and her team. Both sides are just thrilled to be reigniting this franchise. Our conversations were great.” Zaslav fondly spoke about the series’ personal connection to his family and said that he and his wife watch and read the Harry Potter books to their three kids.
JK Rowling will be the executive producer of the show. Interestingly, it appears that executives at Warner Bros. Discovery or Max are unfazed by Rowling’s many controversies about transgender rights.
So far the cast for the high-budget series has not been disclosed. Channing Dungey, Warner Bros. TV Group Chairperson, told Deadline Hollywood about the casting and said that they have not gone scouting for potential actors or reached out to any agencies.
Last year, soon after Max released the trailer of the upcoming series, Daniel Radcliffe, who played the title role in the international franchise, spoke about his potential involvement in the series. He said, “My understanding is that they’re trying to very much start fresh and I’m sure whoever is making them will want to make their own mark on it and probably not want to have to figure out how to get old Harry to cameo in this somewhere.” He wished the makers of the TV series “all the luck in the world”.
The seven-bestselling Harry Potter books have sold almost 600 million copies worldwide. Its eight-movie franchise grossed an estimated $7.7 billion globally. While its spin-off Fantastic Beasts movies grossed $1.8 billion globally.
