Renowned casting director Mukesh Chhabra reflected on the sexual harassment allegations that were made against him in the #MeToo Movement. In 2018, four women had accused the casting director of sexual harassment. A Mid-Day report had claimed that one of the women met the director for a role in 2017 for a film when the incident took place. Another woman left Mumbai after the alleged harassment. While Mukesh had issued a statement regarding the same, in a new interview, Chhabra said that it is ‘easy’ for people to blame someone based on anonymity.
Speaking with The Lallantop, Chhabra said, “The publication which had claimed that we had sent them a letter as well, put out a public statement as well. It is very easy to accuse anyone of something. If you didn’t cast someone, and if they have that grudge… I still say openly, as I had said back then in my statement, that (what is the full picture), tell me. Three days later the situation became normal.”
“Bohot aasan hota hai kisi ke baare mein kuch bhi bolna. You and I are sitting now, but if I go out and tell a third person that you are badtameez, that person will believe me. So it is very easy. The biggest drawback of my field is that, no matter what you do, someone will always be upset with you, say something wrong about you,” the casting director, who also directed Sushant Singh Rajput’s last film Dil Bechara, added.
Back in October 2018, Chhabra had reacted to the claims made against him. He denied the accusations made against him. He said that the accusations were ‘unfortunate’ and threatened to take legal action. “If anyone is indulging in rumour mongering and mischievous slandering, I will take every possible legal action to protect my reputation,” he said at the time.
