Team India registered a dominant win over Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup final on Sunday. Banking on the heroics of Mohammed Siraj, India bowled out Sri Lanka for 50 runs. The right-arm pacer finished the game with his career-best figures of 6 for 21 in 7 overs. The paltry target was chased down by India without losing a single wicket to retain the Asia Cup trophy in the 50-over format.

Now, ahead of the World Cup next month, India will be hosting Australia for a three-match ODI series at home. Senior players including skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya and in-form spinner Kuldeep Yadav have been rested for the first two matches of the series.

“Rohit is taking a break. Others are getting a breather. Rohit and Virat have been around forever. Hardik has been there. Kuldeep too. They got a fair amount of cricket in Asia Cup. Guys need a mental break and come the third game our main players will play,” BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar said

KL Rahul will be leading the side in the absence of Rohit who will be returning to lead a full-strength squad in the third and final ODI ahead of the World Cup beginning October 5.

India’s squad for the third ODI against Australia is essentially the team that will be heading into the World Cup with the addition of Ravichandran Ashwin and Washington Sundar as possible replacements for Axar Patel who picked up an injury during the Asia Cup.

Ashwin’s inclusion in the squad came as a surprise to many as the veteran spinner had been missing from ODI cricket for over a year. He last played an ODI game in January 2022.

Meanwhile, youngsters Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Tilak Varma have found a place in the squad for the first two ODIs. Team India will be assembling in Mohali today ahead of the first ODI slated to be played on September 22.
