Do you suddenly feel peckish at midnight? You’re starving, not simply hungry. You already had your dinner but still looking out for some or the other food item or gazing at fried snacks like fries, chips, popcorn, pizza or some other sweets after an early dinner. If you experience cravings, you are in the right place to know and get your head cleared as to why this happens.
In an Instagram post, dietitian Simrat Kathuria asserts that while feeling hungry after supper is “totally normal," what counts is how you satisfy your appetite.
Captioning the post, she wrote, “We already know that these snacks are unhealthy and should be avoided as they lead to weight gain. It is completely normal to feel hungry even after you have eaten your dinner. But you should ensure that you eat healthy, nutritious snacks that will keep you full for longer."
Here is what the health expert has recommended.
Eat your snack for at least an hour before going to bed. This way, your stomach will settle and it will be easier for you to digest food.
Aim for a balanced snack that includes the necessary amounts of carbs, fat, and protein. A healthy and well-balanced snack will keep your blood sugar levels stable and your stomach full all night.
Avoid the temptation to have a large snack right before bed. “Treating a bedtime snack as a meal is not healthy", she said.
Never skip your dinner; always eat light or early dinner to feel full and sleep better.
List of healthy snacks you can have post-midnight to serve your cravings and taste buds.
Oatmeal Cookies
Oatmeal cookies have several benefits. They contain significant minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium. They also have fewer calories as compared to sugar cookies.
A Peanut Butter And Jelly Sandwich
Peanut butter is a natural source of the amino acid tryptophan which induces sleepiness. Peanut butter, which is high in protein, and complex carbohydrates make the perfect bedtime snack.
Popcorn
Popcorn is a great midnight snack because you can eat a lot of it without breaking the bank on calories. In fact, three cups of air-popped popcorn contain less than 100 calories and approximately 4 grams of fibre, which will satisfy your hunger.
