Star Indian batsman Suryakumar Yadav, Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza, Ugandan sensation Alpesh Ramjani and New Zealand’s Mark Chapman have been shortlisted for the ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year award for 2023.
Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar, who picked up the award in the year 2022, did not suffer from any second season syndrome as he led from the front in another year that marked the 33-year-old’s acumen with the willow.
He was also handed the role of the national side’s captaincy towards the end of the year and he handled the pressure exceptionally well bringing up crucial knocks against the likes of heavyweights Australia and South Africa to close out the year.
His starring performances with the bat earlier in the year against West Indies and Sri Lanka did not go unnoticed as the maverick Indian batter continued his brilliant run in the 20-over format.
Suryakumar amassed a total of 733 runs in 17 innings in the year averaging 48.86 at a strike rate of 155.95 to polish off the year.
Sikandar Raza
Zimbabwe revelation Raza has been in splendid form in the shortest format of the game totalling 515 runs with the bat for the African nation from 11 games, while also adding 17 wickets at an economy of 6.57.
The all-rounder spearheaded the minnow’s challenge in the African qualifiers for the World Cup as he managed to cross the half-century mark nine times out of his eleven innings in the year.
Alpesh Ramjani
Ugandan left-arm orthodox bowler Ramjani had a year to remember as he managed to scalp 55 wickets over the course of the year at a strike rate of 8.98, and a miserly economy of 4.77.
He contributed with the bat too for the cause of his national side, who made it through the qualifiers to earn a berth for themselves at the upcoming T20I showpiece in the Caribbean for the very first time in their history.
Mark Chapman
Kiwi player Chapman too had a memorable year as he tallied 556 runs with the willow in hand from his 17 appearances in the T20I format last year, averaging just over the 50-mark at a strike rate of 145.54.
His unbeaten ton against Pakistan on the road was one of the best innings across formats in the year as he helped the Kiwis pull off a series draw in Pakistan.
