Who was Lee Kuan Yew?
Lee Kuan Yew was the founding Prime Minister of Singapore, serving from 1959 to 1990. He is widely regarded as the founding father of modern Singapore and for his leadership in spearheading the country’s economy into a developed nation in a matter of a few decades.
Lee was born into a wealthy Chinese family in Singapore. He studied law at the University of Cambridge, and returned to Singapore to practice law and become involved in politics. In 1954, he co-founded the People’s Action Party (PAP), which went on to win a landslide victory in the 1959 general election.
As Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee brought a number of policies that helped to transform the country from a poor, underdeveloped country into a wealthy, prosperous nation.
History
Lee Kuan Yew became Singapore’s Prime Minister in 1959, serving successive terms until he resigned in November 1990, when he was appointed Senior Minister by Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong.
He was re-appointed again after the 1991, 1997 and 2001 general elections. He was appointed Minister Mentor by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in August 2004, and was reappointed again after the 2006 general elections
He stepped down as Minister Mentor in May 2011, and was appointed Senior Advisor to the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation. Lee passed away on 23 March 2015.
