Punjab Kings Clarify About Signing 'Right' Shashank Singh at IPL 2024 Auction
Punjab Kings issued a clarification that they had picked the right cricketer during the IPL auction in Dubai, contrary to reports that they had bid for a 'wrong' player because of confusion in the name.

Punjab Kings have released a statement clarifying that they have picked the right player during the IPL Auction on Tuesday as a bizarre moment happened in the ceremony when PBKS sealed the move for Shashank Singh. The franchise looked a bit confused after signing him as there were two uncapped with the same name – Shashank Singh and reports started floating that they had bid for the wrong player.

When the auctioneer announced Shashank’s name, PBKS co-owner Preity Zinta raised the paddle and sealed the player. According to reports, the franchise later ‘realised’ that it had made a mistake and approached the auctioneer to reverse the deal.

“Media have reported on Shashank Singh being bought erroneously by the Punjab Kings. The Kings would like to clarify that the player was always on our target list. The confusion was due to 2 players of the same name being on the list. We are delighted to have him on board and see him contribute to our success,” the PBKS stated in a release.

Punjab Kings, formerly Kings XI Punjab, are one of the eight inaugural franchises of the IPL jointly owned by Ness Wadia, Mohit Burman, Preity Zinta and Karan Paul. However, they have yet to win an IPL trophy.

PBKS CEO Satish Menon also issued a clarity and said he is delighted to have the right Shashank onboard for the next season.

“Two players of similar names on the IPL list created confusion. I am delighted to share that the right Shashank Singh has been onboarded. He has put out some noteworthy performances, and we’re ready to unleash his talent,” he said.

Meanwhile, Shashank also reacted to Punjab’s statement and wrote on X, “It’s All Cool … Thank you for Trusting on me!!!!”

Punjab went big for the two fast-bowling all-rounders Harshal Patel and Chris Woakes to strengthen their bowling unit.

Punjab went all out on Harshal, who won the Purple Cap in IPL 2021, as they battled it out with Gujarat Titans to sign him.

Chris Woakes was a smart buy at INR 4.20 crore. However, in the end, they went all out for Rilee Rossouw in the accelerated round when they had to fill the last spot. Rossouw who went unsold in the first round, raked up big with an INR 8 crore bid.
