South Bombay’s famous Fort’s CampionSchool and St Mary’s School in Mazgaon are on the verge of being converted into co-education institutions. The majority of the Jesuit-run schools in India have always been known to cater to a singular gender. However, the chairperson of the Council of Management Father Keith D’Souza explained that institutions are gradually moving towards embracing the principle of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principle on their campuses, reported Times of India.
According to them, co-education is a more ‘natural way’ of studying and can help encourage boys to be more respectable towards their female counterparts. However, the decisions are still under consideration no concrete dates have been provided regarding the transition.
Fort’s CampionSchool is a premier institution in India, boasting an impressive alumni from different fields. Entrepreneurs and celebrities like Ratan Tata, Kumar Manglam Birla, Shashi Tharoor, and Rishi Kapoor have been a part of this famous school. For the first time in eight decades of existence, Campion is on the verge of introducing female students to their campus. At Campion, both the PTA body and school staff have been notified about the possibility of the upcoming changes as the campus will require some modifications to welcome female students. Campion’s general body member Father Frazer said that the process is currently still under consultation and awaiting a formal decision.
St Mary’s is another such school that is expected to follow suit. It is a 170-year-old institution that also features an illustrious alumni list. As per reports, the Coordinator for Education of the Bombay Province Father Francis Swamy recently voiced that St Mary’s already has co-education for classes XI and XII. They will now be focusing on bringing the Cambridge programme to the pre-primary level of education.
Several experts have voiced the benefits of co-education in recent years as it helps in instilling the concept of gender equality at an early age and helps break stereotypes. They have also suggested that co-education is also a major boost towards improving a student’s personality and instilling them with more confidence.
One of the more recent implementations, co-ed implementation in Stanislaus School in Bandra has already received some good response. Another such case occurred in Dhobi Talao at the St Xavier’s High School which became co-ed in 2021. The Bharda New High School in Fort is a 132-year-old Parsi-run minority school that also welcomed girls on its campus recently. Vinita Lewis, the principal of the Bharda School explained that they had received several requests from parents who wished to send their girl children into the same school as their siblings.
