Batting great Sunil Gavaskar heaped praise on young batting sensation Rinku Singh for his impressive start to India career.
After consistent performances in domestic cricket and IPL, Rinku is now making it count on the international stage. He has been flourishing well in the role of a finisher in the T20I format and has become one of the contenders to get a place in India’s T20 World Cup squad next year.
Rinku has played 55 List A matches in which he scored 1844 runs at a sublime average of 49.83. While in 42 First-Class matches, he has 3007 runs at an average of 57.82.
Gavaskar pointed out how Rinku put in the hard yards to make a name for himself.
“Talent – it’s not given to everybody. You can love the game. You can play all day, but sometimes you know you might not quite have the talent, but he has the belief that he could do it, and that’s what he’s done over the last 2-3 years. Again here in the IPL, he was in and out of a lot of teams when he finally got the opportunity and the way he grabbed it (was amazing),” Gavaskar told Star Sports.
Meanwhile, it was IPL 2023 where Rinku stood out for his franchise Kolkata Knight Riders by scoring 474 runs at an average of 59.25 and a strike-rate of 149.52 in 14 innings. He took the cricketing world by storm with five sixes in consecutive balls in the final over of an IPL match to help his team emerge victorious.
Thanks to his exploits, he’s also being touted as the next Yuvraj Singh considering his ability to hit big shots at will.
However, Gavaskar said that if Rinku manages to achieve a fraction of what Yuvraj did then it would be great for him and Indian cricket.
“And now he’s part of an India team. And now there’s so much, so many high expectations of them. They are now expecting him to be another Yuvraj Singh. Rinku Singh – Yuvraj Singh. So if you can do even a fraction of what Yuvraj did for Indian cricket, then he will have done wonderfully well,” the former India captain said.
