Mohammed Shami received the honour following a memorable performance during the 2023 ODI World Cup in India where he finished as the leading wicket-taker.

India cricketer Mohammed Shami on Tuesday was bestowed with the Arjuna Award, the country’s second highest sporting honour given by the government.

Shami received the award from President Droupadi Murmu at the National Sports Awards held in New Delhi.

“Its the biggest achievement of my life I can’t express my feelings. I love my sport and I always try to do best whatever I am doing. The kind of support my family gave to me to pursue my dream is just amazing,” Shami said.

“I don’t have words to explain that how I started my journey from Amroha to Indian cricket. Passion is always there and I always try to play as much as I can and do well for the country,” he added.

Despite missing the first four matches of India’s 2023 world cup campaign, Shami left quite an impression with a stunning show that saw him finish with 24 wickets from seven games including three five-wicket hauls.

With India set to play T20 World Cup in June this year, Shami has said he’s available to play should the team management ask him to be.

“Whenever it comes to T20s , many times I don’t understand that whether I am in scene or not. But what I feel is that you have IPL before the T20 World Cup and that is the best opportunity to bring in momentum, and if management will ask me to play, I’ll be available,” Shami said.

Shami though hasn’t played any competitive cricket since the final of the ODI World Cup in November last year. He’s been nursing an ankle injury with reports claiming the veteran bowler took injections throughout the competition to deal with the pain.

He missed the tour of South Africa and may also sit out from the first two Tests of the upcoming five-match series against England at home.
