Hyderabad: The BJP Andhra Pradesh unit on Monday alleged that the Congress-led state government has failed to undertake any adequate relief measures to help the farmers affected by the recent Nilam cyclone.
"The situation is very serious in coastal districts which bore the brunt of the cyclone and the state government is yet to prepare a report for financial assistance which needs to be sent to the Centre," BJP state president G Kishan Reddy told reporters Hyderabad.
The farmers, who lost their standing crops like paddy, cotton and chilly, have turned helpless and are yet to get any financial aid from the government, he said. The state has failed to estimate the losses even after 15 days of the cyclone that played havoc in 14 districts of the state, especially in eight districts, he added.
"Standing crops in coastal districts have been inundated as there was no proper system to drain the rainwater as canals had not been repaired for years," Reddy alleged.
He demanded setting up of an expert committee comprising revenue officials and technical experts for delta modernisation and to bring out permanent solution to minimise the loss in case of natural calamities like cyclone and floods in coastal areas.
He also demanded setting up of a "Drainage Board" to take up the work of drainage systems and modernisation of canals in the coastal areas. Earlier, a BJP delegation led by Reddy submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy listing the problems faced by cyclone-affected farmers.
