Kolkata: The Election Commission has directed West Bengal authorities to arrest all those facing non-bailable warrants and seize illegal arms and ammunition to facilitate a free and fair election.
Chief Electoral Officer in West Bengal Debashis Sen said already 2,314 persons having non-bailable warrants had been arrested over the last three days.
Execution of altogether 62,130 non-bailable warrant cases were pending in the state, he said.
The CEO said prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC had been imposed in the state banning carrying of arms and ammunition. The state police have seized 26 illegal arms, 77 cartridges and 70 crude bombs in last three days.
Issue of new license for arms has been prohibited and old arms license would not be reviewed by authorities.
The CEO said a list of sensitive areas would soon be handed over to the central para-military force on their arrival in West Bengal.
