Chavan asks Centre to persuade EU to revoke ban on Indian mangoes
The European Union has temporarily banned the import of Alphonso mangoes, the king of fruits, and four vegetables from India from May 1.

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has requested the Central government to include representatives from the state in a delegation going to Brussels regarding revoking ban on mango export to the European Union (EU).

Chavan hoped that the ban will be revoked and appealed to the farmers and exporters not to panic as more mangoes may be exported to Middle East.

The 28-member European Union has temporarily banned the import of Alphonso mangoes, the king of fruits, and four vegetables from India from May 1.

The temporary ban, proposed by the European Commission, includes mangoes, eggplant, the taro plant, bitter gourd and snake gourd, and prohibits the import to tackle the "significant shortcomings in the phytosanitary certification system of such products exported to the EU".
