Kolkata: Two groups of Congress workers in West Bengal on Saturday clashed after one of them objected to the return of party veteran Somen Mitra from the Trinamool Congress.
The incident took place at a meeting convened by WBPCC president Adhir Chowdhury after the party's dismal performance on both the Lok Sabha seats in Kolkata.
The clash between the Somen Mitra group and others erupted after a section of Congress workers pointed out that bringing the former WBPCC chief back to the party, who had deserted it in 2008, had damaged its image.
Chowdhury intervened to stop two warring groups, but his efforts went in vain.
"The incident shows that Congress remains Congress. The condition of Congress organisation in Kolkata is very poor. The incident will have a further negative impact on the party's image," Chowdhury said.
