KV Thangkabalu said that the party will Contest alone in local body polls scheduled for October 17.

Coimbatore: Congress would go it alone in future elections in Tamil Nadu, be it local body or Lok Sabha, its State chief KV Thangkabalu said on Tuesday.

Contesting alone in local body polls scheduled for October 17 and 19, has provided a good opportunity for the party to show its strength and workers also wanted the method to be adopted in future elections, Thangkabalu told.

Replying to a question on support in the Oct13 Tiruchirapalli (West) assembly bye-election, he said that the party has not fielded any candidate considering the 'coalition dharma.' The party workers were aware whom to vote for, he said.

Stating that Congress was instrumental in implementing the Panchayat Raj act, by which the women got empowered and panchayats were given adequate financial power,he alleged that both DMK and AIADMK governments in Tamil Nadu had failed to implement it in the State. Congress will win more seats in he local bodies and take steps to give more powers, including more funds, to them, he said.

On the Koodankulam anti-nuclear protest, Thangkabalu said the rs.13,000 crore plant was ready to be commissioned in another month or so and in the history of 40 years of Nuclear energy in India, not a single plant proved to be unsafe. However, the expert panel, appointed by the Centre, would go into the details of security and safety aspects, he said.

On the demand to commute the death sentence of three convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, Thangkabalu said State government should execute the Court order in hanging them.
