New Delhi: Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav defended party's strongman Mohammed Shahabuddin saying the controversy over the latter getting bail was a creation of Bharatiya Janata Party and media and only courts can decide such things.
Speaking to CNN-News18, Lalu said that media’s interest in Shahabuddin’s bail had surprised him. "Why is media so much interested in it and who is media to decide such things? Why is everyone questioning the court?" Lalu said.
He added that media had colluded with the BJP to target him.
Lalu broke his silence on Shahabuddin case even as the Nitish Kumar government is set to appeal against the former RJD leader's bail.
Shahabuddin was released from Bhagalpur jail on Saturday morning after 11 years as Patna High Court granted him bail in the Rajiv Raushan murder case. Rajiv was the prime witness in the case of brutal murder of his two brothers in Shahabuddin’s native village in Siwan district on August 16, 2004.
Reacting to Lalu’s comments, Bihar BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi said that JDU-RJD government in the state would not challenge bail to Shahabuddin in the SC.
Shahabuddin is a prime accused in almost 50 criminal cases including several murder cases.
Noted lawyer Prashant Bhushan has decided to challenge his bail in the Supreme Court.
