New Delhi: Slamming Digvijaya Singh for his anti-RSS remarks, the BJP on Monday accused him of "trying to communalise" the fight against terror and alleged that the Congress was using him for diversionary tactics as it was under attack over the Mumbai bombings.
"It is very unfortunate that Digvijaya Singh is deliberately trying to provoke and seeking to change the entire investigation into the Mumbai serial blasts. It is BJP's charge that he is deliberately trying to communalise the fight against terror for petty political gains," BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
He was reacting to Singh's comment on Sunday that "RSS was spreading terrorism in the country and it has been making bomb factories." The Congress general secretary had earlier courted controversy when he said that he does not rule out the involvement of Sangh in Mumbai serial blasts.
"We all know whom the SIT and the NIA are interrogating in the terror attack case," Prasad said and claimed that such statements from Singh were denting India's image on the international stage.
"His utterances must also be gladdening the hearts of terrorists, and notably the ISI," Prasad said.
Indian Mujahideen is being seen as a prime suspect in the three blasts that took place in Mumbai on July 13 and some members of the outfit have been questioned in the matter.
Demanding an apology from Congress leadership, Prasad said, "There is a legitimate suspicion to infer that Digvijaya Singh is speaking the language of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi... The intention behind his speaking is help the government which is getting implicated in scandal after scandal and is not able
to shed off its image of being soft on terror."
"Singh's comments are unfortunate and condemnable. Congress should apologise. What is it that whenever the issue of terror or corruption comes up, Singh becomes very active... It appears that he is giving relief to the Congress from attacks on these issues (by diverting attention)," Prasad said.
The BJP strongly defended its founthead, the RSS, saying it is a nationalist organisation that the party is proud of.
The party 'requested' Congress President Sonia Gandhi to put a check on Singh and not permit the "sacrifice of amity and integrity" of the country for votebank politics.
Since Singh has been appointed by Sonia Gandhi and is the political mentor of Rahul, "he is speaking his master's voice". This was more so, as both Sonia and Rahul are silent on most issues, Prasad said.
He wondered why Singh was still making public comments when Sonia Gandhi had declared sometime back that only Congress spokespersons will speak to the media.
Recalling Singh's controversial statements, the BJP MP said he had questioned the Batla House encounter and visited the families of the terrorists in Azamgarh, "called Osama bin Laden 'Osamaji', labelled Baba Ramdev a thug and Anna Hazare a dictator. He had also called Suresh Kalmadi innocent though
the latter is in jail.
"Singh's comments cannot be more irresponsible, cheap and unfortunate. We want him to speak more as we gain from his statements. But he is trying to break the consensus in the fight against terror. BJP wants the country to stay united," Prasad said.
Reacting to Ujjain incidents involving Singh and BJP activists, Prasad said, "He (Singh) is starting a new discourse in politics. He should show this courage in fighting against terror."
Asked about cases of terrorism where some Hindu organisations were allegedly involved, the BJP spokesperson said nobody was stopping the government from taking appropriate action.
"In the case of Pragya Thakur, the Madhya Pradesh government is also taking action," he said.
