Dramatic twist in Sunanda Pushkar death, police file murder case, husband Shashi Tharoor 'stunned'
Delhi Police says all relevant people, including Sunanda's husband and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, will soon be questioned.

New Delhi: In a dramatic twist almost a year after the death of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor's wife Sunanda Pushkar, the Delhi Police on Tuesday registered a case of murder. Sunanda was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her room of the Leela hotel in Delhi on January 17, 2014.

According to police sources, the final clarification report of AIIMS mentions that 'death is homicidal' in nature. Registering an FIR in the case, the Delhi Police said that all relevant people, including Sunanda's husband and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, will soon be questioned.

While AIIMS report claimed that her 'death is homicidal' in nature, it did not specify how it reached the conclusion. The police are yet to probe whether she was given poison orally or she was administered an injection. An FIR in the case also holds importance as the viscera samples have to be sent to a lab abroad for further investigation.

Reacting to the news, Shashi Tharoor assured full cooperation in the investigation. "I am stunned to hear that the Delhi Police have filed a case of murder against unknown persons in the demise of my late wife Sunanda. Needless to say I am anxious to see this case is investigated thoroughly and continue to assure the police of my full co-operation. Although we never thought of any foul play in the death of my wife, we all want that a comprehensive investigation be conducted and that the unvarnished truth should come out," he said in a statement.

"In the meantime I join all members of Sunanda's family in asking for full information about the basis on which the police have come to this conclusion. We have not been provided with copies of the post-mortem report and other reports of the inquiry like the CFSL report till date. We repeat our request for a copy of these reports to be provided to us immediately," he added.

Meanwhile, Sunanda's family members claimed that they knew all along that she was murdered. "We all are very sad and devastated. Honestly we didn't expect this. The police should get to the bottom of the truth. It's frustrating for all of us for the last one year. We already suffered a lot, with this new twist we are completely devastated. Delhi police should send us info first instead of sending it everywhere. As family members, we should know what is happening," her brother Ashish Dass said.

The latest disclosure has also led to a major debate in the political circle. The BJP claimed that a conspiracy in the case was soon to be uncovered. "Nobody can't be deprived of life. Very high profile people are involved (in the case). There is a conspiracy of silence. This (is) a murder. I was going to file a PIL on January 15 but now I'm happy (that) finally police registered the case for murder. This is not a general case of crime of passion," BJP leader Subramanian Swamy said.

Defending Tharoor and advocating for a fair trial, Congress leader Rashid Alvi said, "Shashi Tharoor himself wants the investigation in the Sunanda death case to be completed."
